AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods 5 (2026): Which to Buy?

White wireless earbuds and charging case

AirPods are one of the most-given tech gifts of the holidays, and this year the choice changed. In September 2026 Apple replaced AirPods 4 with AirPods 5, which bring the strongest noise cancellation Apple has put in an open-fit earbud, at $129 or $149 with a wireless charging case. AirPods Pro 3, Apple’s in-ear model, lists at $249 but sells for around $199 on Amazon. That makes the gap between them smaller than ever — and makes the choice less about price than about fit, noise cancellation and the health features only the Pro has. Here is how to choose, plus when last year’s AirPods 4 is still worth buying.

Quick Verdict

Best for most people: AirPods Pro 3. At around $199 on Amazon they cost only about $50 more than AirPods 5 and deliver much stronger noise cancellation, better sound, longer battery life, a secure fit for workouts, and hearing-health and heart-rate features.

Buy AirPods Pro 3 for flights, commutes, workouts and the best sound.
Buy AirPods 5 if you dislike silicone ear tips and want a light, open fit with decent noise cancellation.

AirPods Pro 3 — The Better Earbuds

Apple AirPods Pro 3 with MagSafe charging case

AirPods Pro 3 seal into your ear with foam-infused silicone tips in five sizes, and that seal is what makes the difference. Apple says their noise cancellation is up to twice as strong as the Pro 2’s, and reviewers agree it is excellent: Tom’s Guide found it very strong on trains and busy streets and called them the best AirPods you can buy, TechRadar called them near-perfect noise-cancelling earbuds, and RTINGS measured top-tier noise isolation. Sound is warm and bass-forward, with Personalized Spatial Audio and head tracking.

The Pro 3 is also the only AirPods model with Apple’s hearing-health features — a clinically inspired hearing test, a hearing-aid mode and hearing protection — and the only one that measures your heart rate during workouts. Battery life is up to 8 hours with noise cancellation on and 24 hours with the case, which charges by USB-C, MagSafe, Qi or an Apple Watch charger and has a speaker and improved Precision Finding to help you locate it.

The downsides: not everyone likes in-ear tips, and Tom’s Guide found the fit could become uncomfortable after a few hours. T3 felt the upgrade from AirPods Pro 2 was smaller than hoped. At Apple’s $249 list price they are expensive, but on Amazon they have sold for $179 to $199 for much of 2026.

Pros

  • Strongest noise cancellation of any AirPods
  • Best sound quality in the lineup
  • Hearing test, hearing aid and hearing protection
  • Heart-rate tracking for workouts
  • 8 hours of battery with ANC
  • Secure in-ear fit with 5 tip sizes

Cons

  • Ear tips aren’t for everyone
  • Can feel tiring over long sessions
  • $249 list price (often less on Amazon)

AirPods 5 — Noise Cancellation Without Ear Tips

Apple AirPods 5 with active noise cancellation and wireless charging case

AirPods 5 keep the open, tip-free design that many people find more comfortable, and add what Apple calls the best open-ear noise cancellation available, removing up to 50% more noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. BGR found it handles air conditioning and road hum well for the price but lets aircraft engine noise and nearby voices through — without a seal, an open-fit earbud cannot block sound the way the Pro 3 does. Transparency mode and Adaptive Audio are excellent, and they are now rated IP57 for sweat and water.

There are two versions: $129 with a USB-C case and $149 with a wireless charging case that also works with Qi and Apple Watch chargers. Battery life is the main weakness, at up to 5 hours with noise cancellation on (4 hours on the base model) and 22 hours with the wireless case. Reviewers found the sound a modest step up from AirPods 4 but less full than the Pro 3; MacRumors described it as muddier in the lower midrange.

Pros

  • Comfortable open fit, no ear tips
  • Best open-ear noise cancellation Apple makes
  • Excellent Transparency mode
  • IP57 sweat and water resistance
  • From $129

Cons

  • Noise cancellation much weaker than Pro 3
  • Short battery life (4-5 hours with ANC)
  • No hearing-health or heart-rate features
  • Less secure fit for running

What About AirPods 4?

Apple no longer sells AirPods 4 on its own store, but Amazon still has AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation at a discount — around $119 when we checked. They have the same open fit and H2 chip, with weaker noise cancellation than AirPods 5, a lower IP54 rating and up to 4 hours of battery with ANC. They are a sensible budget gift only while they cost clearly less than the $129 AirPods 5; at the same price, buy the newer model.

Head-to-Head

Noise cancellation: AirPods Pro 3. A sealed in-ear fit blocks far more noise than any open design, which matters most on planes and trains.

Comfort: AirPods 5, if ear tips bother you. Otherwise the Pro 3’s five tip sizes fit most ears well.

Battery: AirPods Pro 3. Up to 8 hours with ANC against 5.

Sound: AirPods Pro 3. Fuller bass and clearer detail in reviews.

Health and fitness: AirPods Pro 3. Hearing test, hearing aid, hearing protection and heart-rate tracking are Pro-only.

Price: AirPods 5. $129 to $149, though Amazon discounts have brought the Pro 3 within about $50.

Both work best with an iPhone. They connect to Android phones as Bluetooth earbuds, but features such as automatic switching, Personalized Spatial Audio, Live Translation and the hearing-health tools rely on Apple devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are AirPods Pro 3 worth it over AirPods 5?

For most people, yes. On Amazon the Pro 3 usually costs about $50 more than the $149 AirPods 5 and offers much stronger noise cancellation, better sound, up to 8 hours of battery instead of 5, a secure in-ear fit, and hearing-health and heart-rate features. Choose AirPods 5 only if you find in-ear tips uncomfortable.

Did AirPods 5 replace AirPods 4?

Yes. Apple announced AirPods 5 in September 2026 at $129 and $149, and AirPods 4 are no longer listed on Apple’s store. Amazon still sells AirPods 4 with ANC at a discount while stock lasts.

Do AirPods 5 have noise cancellation?

Yes. Both AirPods 5 models have active noise cancellation, which Apple says removes up to 50% more noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. Because they have an open fit without ear tips, their noise cancellation is weaker than AirPods Pro 3.

Which AirPods have the best battery life?

AirPods Pro 3, with up to 8 hours of listening with noise cancellation on and up to 24 hours with the case. AirPods 5 manage up to 5 hours with ANC (4 on the base model) and up to 22 hours with the wireless case.

Are AirPods Pro 3 good for working out?

Yes. They are rated IP57 for sweat and water, the in-ear tips hold them securely, and they can track your heart rate during workouts with a compatible iPhone. AirPods 5 are also IP57 but their open fit is less secure for running.

Do AirPods work with Android?

AirPods connect to Android phones as standard Bluetooth earbuds, but many features, including automatic device switching, Personalized Spatial Audio, Live Translation and the Pro 3’s hearing-health tools, require Apple devices.

Final Verdict: AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods 5?

AirPods Pro 3 are the better buy for most people, especially at Amazon’s discounted price. The noise cancellation, sound, battery life and health features are all clearly better, and the extra $50 or so is easy to justify for anyone who commutes, flies or works out.

AirPods 5 are the right gift for someone who can’t stand ear tips. They are comfortable, light and, for an open-fit earbud, surprisingly good at cutting background noise.
